Whale sharks migrate through the Gulf of Oman every year to feed on plankton. The deep channels around the Daymaniyat Islands, often called Whale Shark Alley, offer a reliable place to spot them.

When is the best time to see whale sharks in Oman?

The prime season to spot whale sharks at the Daymaniyat Islands is from May to October.

If you want the highest chance of swimming with them, aim for July to October. During these warmer months, plankton-rich waters attract the whale sharks to the deeper channels surrounding the archipelago.

Can you go on the islands during whale shark season?

No, beach access is strictly banned during the prime whale shark months.

From May 1 to October 31, the Environment Authority prohibits landing on any of the nine islands. This rule protects nesting sea turtles and migratory birds. All whale shark and snorkeling tours during this period are boat-only.

Where do you see whale sharks in the reserve?

Tour operators look for whale sharks in the deeper waters known as Whale Shark Alley.

These channels run between and around the islands. Since whale sharks move constantly to feed, boat captains use their knowledge of the area and communicate with other boats to locate them each day.

Are you allowed to swim with the whale sharks?

Yes, you can snorkel near the whale sharks, but strict rules apply.

The reserve regulations state that visitors must not touch, chase, or harass the whale sharks. You must give them plenty of space and observe them calmly. Motorized boats must also keep a safe distance.

Pack items for strong sun and open water.

Summer temperatures in Oman are high. Bring a reusable water bottle and proper sun protection. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before the 40 to 50-minute boat ride from Muscat.

How much does a whale shark boat tour cost?

A boat tour from Muscat generally costs between 25 and 45 OMR.

This price usually includes your mandatory 3 OMR government reserve permit, snorkeling equipment, and refreshments. Tours depart from Al Mouj Marina or Seeb Marina.
