Which is better for snorkeling: Daymaniyat Islands or Bandar Khayran?

The Daymaniyat Islands generally offer a more protected and diverse snorkeling experience.

The reserve protects an archipelago of nine limestone islands. It houses over 250 documented species of reef fish across depths of 3 to 15 meters. The waters here are highly regulated to protect the coral.

What marine life will you see?

Daymaniyat is a critical sanctuary for sea turtles, migratory birds, and seasonal whale sharks.

Snorkelers often see globally endangered Hawksbill and Green sea turtles. Between May and October, migratory whale sharks feed in the deeper channels. Bandar Khayran has coastal marine life, but Daymaniyat's offshore status attracts larger species.

How does the boat ride compare?

Boats depart from Al Mouj Marina or Seeb Marina in Muscat. Since the reserve is 16 to 18 kilometers off the coast, the ride crosses the open Gulf of Oman. If you get seasick easily, bring motion sickness medication. Bandar Khayran is closer to the mainland coast.

Are there entry fees and permits?

Yes, visiting the Daymaniyat Islands requires a government permit.

The Environment Authority charges 3 OMR for foreign adults and 1 OMR for Omani nationals per day. Tour operators usually include this fee in the 25 to 45 OMR boat tour price. Access to Bandar Khayran does not fall under the same offshore nature reserve regulations.

This closure protects nesting sea turtles and migratory birds. During these months, you must stay on your boat while visiting the reserve. Landing Ban Rules Between November and April, you can land on designated islands.

Which location should you choose?

Choose Daymaniyat for offshore coral reefs and turtles, and Bandar Khayran for shorter trips.

If you want to snorkel over protected coral reefs and swim with turtles, the Daymaniyat Islands are the clear choice. A standard tour takes 4 to 5 hours. Bandar Khayran works well if you prefer fjord-like scenery closer to the shoreline.
